Cochise
(1824-1874)

  • In 1874, Cochise died peacefully and was secretly buried in the Dragoon Mountaines in an area today called the Cochise Stronghold.
  • Cochise was the leader of the Central Chiricahua Apaches and son-in-law to Mangas Coloradas.
  • Cochise's arrest in 1861 led to warfare. Mangas Coloradas was wounded, and Cochise carried him 100 miles into Mexico for treatment.
  • Through Tom Jeffords, Indian agent, peace was restored and land given for a reservation.

... the Chiricahuas were moved to the San Carlos Indian Reservation, Arizona.
